Beautiful coastal bouldering in South West UK

On my birthday there was only one place I really wanted to go bouldering; Ladye Bay. Mostly I wanted to get on an epic line called the Darkest Hour (F7B+) and repeat one of my favourite problems down there named Highwayman (F7A+), but I also enjoyed the weather and amazing location to take a few photos on the day. Ladye Bay near Clevedon in North Somerset has a brilliant mix of problems, from F5 to around F7C, but with a leaning towards the mid to high grades. The tidal bay has two main sectors which get sun and shade at different times of day so it can be ideal on a really hot day as you'll always find somewhere to climb. The tidal range and speed of change is remarkable here, and I've seen people barbecuing on the beach lose their entire dinner to the shifting tide. It's been quite some time since my last post - I must admit I have left the camera at home on my last few climbing trips out, been thwarted by dire weather on the trips where I have taken it, and not been up a mountain for far too long. At the tail end of last year though I did manage a trip up the La Soufriere volcano, the highest point on the Caribbean island of St Vincent, including a little trip down into the crater. I only took a point and shoot on this occasion so the photos aren't that great, but I figure the blog is long overdue an update! Lots more to come this year with climbing, bouldering and a lot of mountains! A snowy day in the Black Mountain region of the western Brecon Beacons

When the forecast is for 45mph northerlies and a windchill of -8C you prepare for the worst. That's why I packed the film camera for this trip too, thinking a cold damp day might not play well with the digi. I'd been planning to hit the western Beacons for a while having explored most of the are to the east and in between. I had a few Hewitts I want to explore and so I planned out a good route along the high northern ridges to take in Fan Hir, Fan Brychieniog and Picws Du, with an extension if the conditions were good enough to cross the valley to the west of Picws Du to climb Garreg Las. There had been a good dump of snow from around 500m and upwards and there was a lot of fresh powder higher up and over the tops. An early start from Bristol saw us hitting the route by 10.30 and only a couple of people had broken the snow before us (and a dog).
